Cornwall Vineyard

Cornwall Vineyard

Since 1980, the Healey family have been growing apples and transforming fruit into the finest food and drink in Cornwall.

With expertise in crafting award-winning produce, the family sought the opportunity to grow their own grapes and create new English wines, at Healeys Vineyard at Tregoninny Woodland near Truro. Tregonniny is set in the perfect location to produce Cornish wines, crafted with Healeys know-how.

Apples may be our first love, but they’re not the only fruit we’re passionate about. At Healeys Vineyard and Woodland we create exceptional English wines from grapes we've grown.

Ancient Cornish Landscape

Ancient Cornish Landscape

There is a French word winemakers often use which is "Terroir",  which translates to "land" in English. Terroir is the concept of observing the unique traits of the landscape, including; soil type, climate, geomorphology (topography & terrain), wildlife and other factors, which all play their part when growing any crop.

Tregoninny Vineyard has its own complex micro-climate, founded on the ancient Cornish landscape and nestled in the hills, surrounded by woodland.

When you combine the special location of Tregoninny Vineyard with the expertise of our Cornish winemakers, the outcome is quite spectacular and we cannot wait to share it with you!

Viticulture at Tregoninny

Viticulture at Tregoninny

A total of 12,000 vines were planted in 2018. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc grape varieties will go into producing an array of Cornish sparkling white and rosé wines.

Viticulture can be considered both a science and an art. Every crop must be cultivated, encouraged, carefully trimmed to ensure adequate light and once the vines are ready, each and every grape is lovingly handpicked.

Classic Method Sparkling Wine

Classic Method Sparkling Wine

Our Cornish sparkling wine is produced using the "Classic Method". The classic method is the same process used in the Champagne region of France to produce Champagne.

  1. The first fermentation takes place in a barrel or tank and the winemaker will create a blend or "Cuvée" with a selection of base wines.
  2. The wine is then bottled and blended with a small amount of yeast & sugar, which will initiate a unique secondary fermentation in the bottle. This part of the process is known as Tirage.
  3. Aging. Wines age for a period of time on the lees. Aging can last anywhere between 9 months and 5 years.
  4. Riddling & Disgorging. Over the course of several days, the bottles will be gradually tilted neck-down, whilst also being rotated in very small increments, clockwise and anti-clockwise. As the angle of the tilt increases, the force of gravity will draw the remaining lees sediment (from the second fermentation) into the neck for easy removal. Once riddling has been completed, we'll freeze the sediment & disgorge.
  5. The final step before corking and labelling is the "dosage". A small amount of wine & residual sugar must be added back into the bottle. This is the winemakers signature, which will ultimately decide the final taste and level of sweetness/dryness of the sparkling wine.
